Congratulations on your TOTPD. But it won't change my opinion regarding Leela.
There, I said it.

Did it mean anything?...

There...I still like Leela but she's just not the one out of the twoI would say is more 'sexy'.

Futurama Llama, that is incredibly sexist.  Do you think Fry has dozens of STD's?  He's gotten more action than we've actually seen anyone else get over the course of the show.

Amy and Leela take a lot of crap around here. Judging Amy is a popular sport, but we really don't know that much for sure beyond generalizations. We don't know for sure any of Amy's sex life past Fry, right?

Besides, Amy's now loyal to Kif - no more STD's for her!

Well, we know Amy went to a car's backseat to have coffee with that guy in "Second that Emotion"...but that could have just been necking.  (People DO go to cars just to neck, I've seen it happen!)  And she went off with the energy being at the Hip Joint (but heck, I'd have gone off with him too.  ...what?)

Other than that (and Fry) we've mostly just seen her flirting a lot.

She probably does have more sex than Leela.  What of it?  Amy's a twenty-one-or-so-year-old college student, that's the time when most people DO explore their sexuality.  Plus, we know she was fat as a child...I think that being "cute" is actually pretty new to Amy, which is why she tries so hard, dwells on it a lot, and disses Leela (all signs of insecurity); Leela doesn't seem to try at all, yet when she gets spiffed up, she's stunning.  I think that must bug Amy on some level.

Also, I suspect Amy and her friends (you know, the ones we don't see, but are mentioned, like on her calendar) have a semi-friendly, semi-competitive thing going where they "zing" each other a lot over their looks.  The zinged party then either zings back or waits for her chance to do a major retaliatory zing at an unexpected moment.  Leela, however, doesn't feel the need to compete on that level, and so never "zings" back.  You'll notice that as the series went on, Amy's zings grew more infrequent.

All this makes me feel that Amy is just not used to being attractive and is making up for lost time.  She's still a little unsure of herself in this respect; hence, the frequent flirting and mentions of her cuteness in the era B.K. (Before Kif).

And finally...(pardon the shouting)...THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH WOMEN WHO LIKE SEX.  IF IT'S OKAY FOR GUYS IT'S OKAY FOR GIRLS.  IT'S NOT THE FREAKIN' MIDDLE AGES ANYMORE, LETS JUST DROP THE HYPOCRITICAL DOUBLE STANDARD, OKAY?!

 Just had to say that.

And good to see you again, Ralph!

Well Shiny, we do know that Amy has done more than flirting.  In the cut out scene of X-Mas Story, Amy crashes into the PE group knocking them all dow.  Bender says "I'm calling my lawyer!" to which Amy replies, "I hope so, I slept with him last night!"

And you're right, there's nothing wrong with women liking sex (or at least I don't think so -  irather enjoy 'experienced' women).  My belief to the reason that the writers made Amy so 'easy' was to give a foil to the straightlaced Leela:  In a lot of ways Amy is mirror image of Leela - opposite in almost every way.  Amy's clumsy while Leela is agile like a cat.  Amy has a nice body but it isn't anything like the temple of flesh that Leela has become (via lots of exercise).  Amy's rich while Leela barely eeks out a living.  Amy had a childhood of priviledge where Leela had nothing.  Amy has no problem getting any guy she wants where Leela spends her nights cooking her meals for the next month and freezing them.

So Leela can be a little jealous of Amy - that's why the AOI eps have Leela killing Amy in rather brutal fashions.  Amy makes little quips at Leela because she both admires Leela and is just a little afraid of her.

Amy can show signs of comforting Leela; when Bender flushed Nibbler down the toilet, trying to get Leela to go out and pick up guys, showing Leela the emotional cue cards during Fry's opera.

So Amy's not evil or bad, and she's not quite as shallow as most people make her - she's just a typical young 20-something college student experimenting with life and enjoying it as she goes along.

Exactly! A progressive (or at least not main-stream) show like Futurama should be able to have a fandom that isn't sexist.

Good to see Ralph back. Amy diserves more serious character discussion than she gets. She isn't so much shallow as she is insecure. Her own dad dissed her for pete's sake. "You stay all over room!"

I've lurked the past few days.  I've been on very strong pain meds for my back.  I worked last night and barely made it through the shift, so I've called out for toniight.  I'm scheduled for an epidural injection Sept 5, so I have to take it easy until then.

There'll be more geekdom coming from me over the next few days.  With the new chapters of fics coming out (Venus, PCC Fred and Layla and I'm sure that SO and Xanfor will be around), and one of my favortie PEEL artist, Demeter blessing us with some of her earlier work, I have a lot to comment on.

Then there's the great work by FemJesse (when she makes her rare appearances), from Marcus (a guilty pleasure - I know Marcus from other boards and emails).  I'll throw a big Hello to El-Man, but most of his artwork is a little too spicy for PEEL...

If your haven't already, read DaveMac's Background Noise; he goes into detail about Amy's childhood and and almost-abusive comments from her father about her weight.  There are mentions of it in former chapters and I'm sure it will appear again in future chapters.

dottcalm...first off, welcome to PEEL!    :)

But I must correct a couple of points...

Amy is from Mars, and she is Chinese, not Japanese.

And Leela is NOT mean to Fry.  Merely refusing to date him is NOT "mean."  His relentless refusal to take "no" for an answer makes her irritable and she gets impatient with him, but you can't call that being "mean" when it's a normal response to repeated provocation.  That's like poking someone in the arm over and over and over, and them telling you politely to stop it like 18 times, and then when they finally yell "I SAID STOP IT!!!" going "You're so mean!"

And Amy IS sweet...but I wonder how sweet she'd stay if somebody she liked, but didn't love, was always hitting her up for dates and swearing to find a way to "make her love him."  I suspect her bitchy side (most often seen with Leela) would come out more often.

It's kind of funny because Fry and Leela go everywhere together anyway.

Fry and Amy are almost too much alike for there to be any sparks. Amy just needs a simple down-to-Mars guy that can run the family business. Maybe her 3rd or 4th husband will do... at least before he embezzles it all.

I'd vote Leela everytime. Amy's a cool character, but I could cope without her in Futurama if it came down to it. Leela I couldn't. If Fry was in it I'd still watch the show, but without Leela it wouldn't be the same. Leela also reminds me a lot of myself in many ways, so she'll always be top  :p
