Why must you hate, Pedro? Why can't we just co-exist peacefully?

Don't pay attention to him.  He hates everybody who implies that Leela might like her best friend who's saved her life at the risk of his own a few times, more than some internet ubernerd who skirts the ragged edge of trollhood on a daily basis.

Just remember: the madder he gets, the better WE must be doing.

And I    your name.

And while I'm at it, I clicked on page 1 of this thread and noticed something...

Damn - Brain Sluggo posted this in May, 2002, and I didn't write "The Other Side of Parasites" until three years later.

I didn't read that post before I wrote it, I swear!

@ Hopeless Shipper:

I don't how long you've been a Futurama fan, but if you just found PEEL, the there's a chance that you don't know about Futurama Madhouse: The Leela Zone - www.futurama-madhouse.com.ar/  .

FM:TLZ has a very large base of fanfics that are for the most part, excellent.  (The crap at fanfiction.net is not as good, in my opinion).  Some PEEL'er have stories there, such as Kif White (several very involved epics), Layla made her debut there last month, I think Shiny has a few of her earlier fics there and my overall favorite - Background Noise by Dave Vincent.

Some are shippy, some are serious, some are humorous and even one anti-shipper story - Leela's Affair.  (Poor Xanfor is still having nightmares about that one.)

Even PEEL's own uber-mod, Kryten has a few stories there - all enjoyable reading.

FM:TLZ also boasts the largest amount of fanart dedicated to Futurama.  Too bad The Voices had his beautiful art pulled from the site, but there still great stuff from FemJesse, Demeter (aka Sarah), El-Man, Cap'n Skusting, Sofie Fenwick and so many more that I don't have time or space to mention.

Let me know if you find this information useful.

Thanks for the tip. I found out about FM:TLZ through a Xanfor link to a Shiny fanfic. It's a good website. I read the synopsis for Leela's Affair, it made me sad, no, suicidal. Naturally, the masocist in me will force me to read it.

Shiny and I've discussed this - the story worked for me because it was different - actually it's one-of-a-kind.  Shiny's problem with it was that it took the personna's involved out of character and she has a valid point.

Almost all shipper stories have Fry maturing somewhat to please Leela - this story had him stay the same, insensitive, selfish person he was before he met Leela.  In real life, how many times have we seen people marry somebody that was not good for them in hopes of changing that person?  That was where Sofie was coming from with that fic, and that's why it worked for me.

Fry and Bender being a robosexual couple made me blow beer through my nose...

Overall, I do like the shippy eps.  One thing that I've noticed in the shippy fics:  Fry has Bender and Amy to confide to; Leela sometimes confides with Amy, but otherwise our favorite Cyclops is standing alone.  I have to wonder if anybody, including her mother, realizes how lonely Leela is?

(Hint!  Hint! to our writers...)

Yeah...my problem is it turned him into a totally different insensitive, selfish person than he has ever been.  Fry can be insensitive and selfish, yes, but he's still a fanboy, not...whatever the hell he was in that story.

It's a noble thought, and I commend your honest effort, but...there's a saying the natives here in Houston have: never try to teach a pig to sing.  It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Your time is too valuable to waste. Spend it talking with the rational folk here instead.  :)

After reading about half of it I can see where it is coming from. I do enjoy the non-shippy fanfic from time to time. It's just that it seems that Fry has had a natural progression through the series to be less self centered (Guess what im going to use a refrence? You guessed right, "The Sting." Although that did have the biker moment. Ouch.)To be honest, super way out there shipper fanfic is of little intrest to me also. I prefer a happy medium, as the show had.

Huh.  Something about the town must attract emotional weirdos.  Nah, just kidding, you're all cool people.  Except Pedro.  Seek professional help, man.

Anyway, regarding fanfics...I've said it repeatedly (mostly in Layla's thread), but when I read Futurama fanfiction, I prefer stuff that sticks as close to the show as possible; that means short, episodic, and funny (see JBERGES, Kryten).  Shipfics are often long, melodramatic, badly characterized, or all three.  That last one especially gets on my nerves.

However, when ship is worked in subtly (as a secondary plot) or well-written* (with less ham-fisted development and more, you know, using the characters from the show), it's a damn good read.

And of course, the ship-oriented episodes are great.  The Sting (though that relates more to FriendShip than Romantic RelationShip in my opinion) remains my favorite episode, up there with The Farnsworth Parabox (see?  there's the "secondary plot" shippy) and Godfellas (what?  I like Bender.)

*this is the one that applies to all of the writers I noticed in this thread.  Except Xanfor, I haven't gotten around to reading his stuff yet.

am i the only one that feels that they did get together after the last episode? I think that making an episode when you actually see them get together would ruin their relationship becuase it relies on such sublties. So I personally feel that the ending we got is the best thing there is to express their relationship into the future.

Well, it’s lost its status as “last,” (see Nerd-o-rama’s link) but I thank you, Sven, for giving me the opportunity to shamelessly plug yet another of my fics

It’s called “What Might Have Happened Next,” and now I’m especially proud of the title & delighted that it’s shortly to be an Alternate Universe story.

Eh, remember he’d been hardly sleeping for like two weeks, and personally I think anyone who motorcycles without a helmet (they didn’t actually SAY that, but I assume that’s why the spleen was up for grabs, futuristic medicine being advanced and all) falls into the “evolution in action” category and doesn’t deserve a whole lot more sympathy than Fry expressed.  (A little more, but not much. )

Really?  I thought most Futurama fans were more sensible than to live in a nearly sub-tropical area that gets more rainfall annually than London.  You do escape for the three worst months, right Nerdmeister?  Don’t tell me you’re gone for the three months that are actually liveable...

I love Bender, and adore Godfellas…you’re right, it’s a good friend-shippy ep for him and Fry, and a good ep to show that, though Bender talks a good talk about not caring for anyone but himself, he reveals a deeper side every now and then.  And it was touching the way Leela supported Fry (and I personally think she missed Bender a bit more than she said she did).

And yeah, you could read "The Sting" as an intense friendship story rather than romantic...it's just as satisfying either way, to me.

Well, since you guys seem to be in permanent typhoon status lately, I'm going to assume the three worst months are summer and say yes.  If I'm wrong...well, we might have different opinions.  I took a vacation to Toronto last month just to get out of the damn heat, which I assume is worse in Houston (I'm currently in Arlington).  Personally, I tend to stay inside except for the couple of weeks of gorgeous weather in the spring.

Anyway, that's enough offtopicness.  But September through May I'm at Rice, so feel free to drop by sometime.

That is good stuff right there! It had me laughing a number of times. Especially, "Your life is such a mess that it sometimes gets hard to breathe. Maybe you should succumb to the sweet embrace of death." That story also rases the interesting point of fanon vs. canon Leela. Even the better shipp fics will use Leela as less something. It annoys me that I can't quite put this thought into words. The other important thing to remember is that alot of fanfics are written to fulfill something for the writer. As such it makes me feel bad to just go around saying that if you can't nail the characters than you have no use writing fanfic. After all... "Leela's a complex character! She doesn't have to make sense!" Sorry I'm so off topic.

I'll tell you what: we'll give Houston baseball if they give the Metroplex Basketball.  We'll call football a draw, as long as DFW gets historical credit.

Now let's go beat up some San Antonians!

EDIT: And thank you for referring to it as "the Metroplex" and not "Dallas".  Urgh, those famous jerks annoy me.

@Ralph   I just finished reading the three parts of "Demons From the Past" on FM:TLZ. I realy enjoyed it. Fry improving himself has been done, but...
1) The way you do it is more logical and likely. (It didn't happen overnight.)
2) Fry learned responsibility. I like that.
3) Bonus points for using Olde Fortran.
Being the noob I have to ask, are there more parts elsewhere, future parts, or is that the end?

Leela and Fry should get together. Permanently. They complement each other. Once they learn from one another enough, all their deficiencies and insecurities will be lessened. Fry will learn to be a little more confident and a little less impulsive. Leela will learn to take everything a little less seriously and to be a little less rude (insecure). It should take some time, and they should grow as people while they grow as friends. Once they've gotten over their individual hang-ups it is likely they'll be happy for a long time to come.

It should happen in the last episode.
