Why is Randy on the show?

I always wonder why the creaters of Futurama made up Randy. He really has no reason at all.

Well in "I, Roomate", he was just an anonymous face in a mob.  My guess is that the producers just liked John DiMaggio's voice for him so much that he had to keep coming back again and again.

He's a funny stereotypically flamboyant man with a funny voice.  If you don't find that funny, then I just don't know what's with you...

yeah, his purpose is just a joke, just like Scruffy, Hattie, and Sal to name a few. The show could go on without them, but their characters are just funny.

Man, you know who was the most unforgettable joke character? Even more unforgettable than Randy? That guy who said "Bender, hey Bender, over here!" which prompts Bender to say "Aw geez, I went to high school with that guy". That robot should have his own sitcom where he keeps running into other robots he went to high school with.

Why, yes... but that's the genius of Lampy's idea... the entire series is told in flaskback, as we see the guy thinking about all the times he did what he loved while he lays there dying! It'd be perfect!

The only thing that confuses me is in one ep. Randy has brown hair! I know he can die it ,but still. If my sister did not tell me it was Randy with brown hair I would now know it was him!

He says that in "Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles," but he has blond hair in that one.  But there are some others, including "Crimes of the Hot," in which he has dark hair (or it's another guy who just sounds like him).

I don't think that the animators intended the guy on the ark to be Randy.  I think it's just a case of John Di Maggio using the same voice for two different background characters.

What about the pool scene in Why Must I be a Crustation in Love? Is he the same guy who has the ark? Is he actually Randy with brown hair? Or is he another fellow with the same voice?

If you look closely, you'll notice that he's wearing the same swimsuit (sans neckerchief and hat).  It's just been colored differently.

Again, it's probably just another gay guy. Although David A does present a good point...they have the same swimsuit and curly chest hairs.

In the DVD commentary for that episode, I believe they say it is Randy.

Randy is in the show because...he's great. He's my favorite out of those minor characters like Sal and Scruffy (both of whom I dislike, and they're basically both lazy people with annoying voices). Randy always gets a laugh out of me.
