There are still countries aparently.. in the second episode Fry says "Who cares we live in the USA" and Leela reply "USA is part of the world" , also several mentions to other countries..

But yet , who espects consistency here?

Maybe it is only the United States that pretend they are the leaders of the world.

You mean subtitles?  I hope you mean subtitles.  Because it would be shameful for it to be dubbed.

Though, I have some times here in Denmark found the subtitles to be funnier than the line it is translating.  Often cruder too.
Yes, subtitles. Hm, I don't think I've ever noticed funnier subtitles than the actual line. But for some shows it's MUCH cruder for some reason - like Hell's Kitchen, when they throw in swears in the subs even when he use none.

A thought occurs:

If the  Earth is united under a single president (the head of Richard Nixon) then what is the function of the United Nations?

EU is united under a presidency, there are still countries in the EU. Earth is not a country, it's a planet. Compare to USA of the 21st century: It is a country, but all states have some own laws and permit different things. Earth of the 31st century (as I understand it) works like USA of today, with some overall laws and government but with different countries with different laws and cultures.

Some of the more notable bits to these eyes (that haven't been discussed lately):

1) Bender/Amy's body language on the emperor's yacht.  From the "wicked" eyes to slouching/lounging with a cigar dangling from the lips, it all shouts out "Bender" yet is still quite sexy in places. :flirt:

2) Does Bender/Amy actually say "Whither?" (rather than, say, "Whereto") when he finds out the Professor has run away?

3) I'm assuming the last gross-out by Fry/Zoidberg is that a tapeworm partially jumps out of his throat?

4) It's hard to determine the timeframe for the whole episode.  Except for the fact that Amy/Leela - Hermes/Leela gains and loses an emormous amount of weight (and Amy/Hermes loses much the same) I'd assume maybe two days at most, but that part of the plot proceeds much quicker than would happen in the here and now...

5) When Leela/Professor looks at Fry/Zoidberg she covers up one of her eyes.  not used to binocular vision?

6) The U.N. marquee resembles a famous one in Las Vegas but I can't recall which hotel it's for..

I took it as Zoidberg just having a little mouthed tongue type thing, as a reference to Alien... but it could be a tapeworm instead, I'll have to watch it again.

Aww, yes, the body language is awesome throughout the episode, it all shows how unique all the characters are. A true masterpiece, in my opinion.

2) Does Bender/Amy actually say "Whither?" (rather than, say, "Whereto") when he finds out the Professor has run away?

Yes.

3) I'm assuming the last gross-out by Fry/Zoidberg is that a tapeworm partially jumps out of his throat?

I took it as an Alien reference (as cyber_turnip said).

All of them?

I heard Bender say "wither," and like any self-respecting fan, I watched this episode a few times.  :D

And I also interpreted Fry/Zoidberg's tongue as a reference to the Alien creature. Cuh-oool!

I can see that as well.  I think the reason I first thought "tapeworm" was that the "Barnacles on my tuchus" comment put me in the frame of mind that Zoidberg is rife with parasites and such.

One little detail I found interesting is the "Employee of the Month" wall, which suggests that Planet Express has been around since 2992, and thus Amy and Hermes have been employees for 18 years.   I guess Amy must have started out as an undergrad intern ;-)

Is there any "canon" information on when Planet Express was founded?

well, we know indirectly that it has been around for awhile.  There were at least two crews prior to the current one (one that died in the space-bee hive, and another headed by Captain Musky).  And When Mom asks the professor "what he's been up to all these years" he replies "sending delivery crews to their doom".  I don't think we have a set founding date though, no.

I'm amazed that nobody has complained that Leela enjoys going to movies starring Nicolas Cage.  Not his head, but the whole body.

I don't think Nicolas Cage being whole would be an issue seeing as she was referring to National Treasure.

So she would pay $14 to see a 1,000 year old movie (Okay, $12 with the Farnsworth Senior Discount)?

Still, she has good taste in actors.  My wife loves Nic Cage.  The only movie he's been in that she doesn't like is Ghost Rider (which I loved).

Nicolas Cage is indeed a good actor. I don't really care for the genre he's mostly in (action), but there are some nice pearls out there.

@ Booze:

I don't know...  I know the Nic Cage version was so bad it gave me cancer.  I'm afraid what the Brit version may do to me.

Honest to God, towards the end, Nic Cage wore a gorilla suit and slapped the female co-star.

It doesn't get much worse than that.

Nic Cage is a wonderful actor but he seems hell bent on making shit films. And when he knows he's in a shit film, he really obviously doesn't care about turning in a decent performance. I thought he was on the verge of a career revival after Kick-Ass but obviously not.

And the original The Wicker Man is a fantastic film.

I checked into The Wicker Man after never having heard of it before, and it sounds cool. Anyway, Prisoner of Benda... maybe Nicolas Cage is neither Cage's head nor his real body but his great [...] grand child in the year 3010? Or himself in a robotic body á Nixon?

Even broke and in debt, he's still spending money.  He recently paid some couple of million $$$ to have a Pyramid built to place his body when he dies.

As long as Leaving Las Vegas, Bringing Out the Dead, Adaptation, Port of Call: New Orleans, Raising Arizona and a majority of the action films he made in the 90s continue to exist, Nic Cage can make all the shit movies he wants and he will still be the king of awesome.

It's refreshing to see people who actually love the guy.

I can't bring the name up in conversation with my friends without being laughed out of the room.
They all seem to confuse poor films with being a bad actor when that really isn't the case. I mean, have you seen what De Niro's been starring in lately?

Cygnus X-1 (abbreviated Cyg X-1)[11] is a well known galactic X-ray source[12] in the constellation Cygnus. It was discovered in 1964 during a rocket flight and is one of the strongest X-ray sources seen from Earth, producing a peak X-ray flux density of 2.3 × 10−23 Wm−2Hz−1 (2.3 × 103 Jansky).[13][14] Cygnus X-1 was the first X-ray source widely accepted to be a black hole candidate and it remains among the most studied astronomical objects in its class. It is now estimated to have a mass about 8.7 times the mass of the Sun[6]  and has been shown to be too compact to be any known kind of normal star or other likely object besides a black hole. If so, the radius of its event horizon is probably about 26 km.
